Examined Man Theatre’s 2009 Season
Examined Man Theatre’s 2009 Season
"When Examined Man Theatre sets out to accomplish a task, it certainly succeeds." - nytheatre.com
Every summer, Examined Man Theatre holds an Artistic Retreat for its members. This retreat fulfills three functions:
1.To create a deep connection between the attendees through a variety of exercises, discussions and social activities.
2.To conceive and incubate potential company projects.
3.To intensively develop the next play scheduled for full production.
The Artistic Retreat pulls our members out of the city, in order to focus our energy fully on supporting and provoking each other. We live communally while we devote ourselves to developing our future projects. At the end of the retreat, we hold special readings of our work for invited guests and patrons in New York.
This past summer we developed two new plays The Secret Keeper (conceived and directed by Portia Krieger ) and The Light Inside (conceived and directed by Damon Krometis)

Examined Man’s First Ever Artist Residency
After a long and intense selection process, Examined Man Theatre has chosen director Portia Krieger to be our first Resident Artist. Portia is being commissioned to create and develop a new play with Examined Man’s ensemble. This new play, entitled The Secret Keeper, will be developed over the next 18 months through our annual Artistic Retreats and special residencies in New York City. The program will culminate in a public showcase of the work in the fall of 2010, and immediate optioning for full production.
You can learn more about Portia on our Members Page, and read a bit about the play she’s developing above.
Help Make It All Happen
Examined Man is moving ahead with several exciting projects, but the only way to take them from workshop to full production is through your help. You can Donate to the cause - we are always very appreciative of any support!!

The Secret Keeper
Created and Directed by Portia Krieger
The Secret Keeper is a dark, funny exploration of the first moment when you discover the world isn't always safe. When a young girl sees something nasty outside her bedroom window, she must confront its danger - with or without her friends and family.
The Secret Keeper will be developed this fall during Examined Man Theatre’s residency at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center. We are excited to bring this amazing new play to LPAC for a special one-night showcase November 11th. Stay on the lookout for details about the performance.
The Secret Keeper is a product of Examined Man’s Artist Residency program. This developmental program is made possible by the support of Anne Towne.
“And in that moment when you begin to feel the intense pressure of looming life change . . . I was handed the incredible gift of this beautiful song . . .” Examined Man explores and celebrates the unbridled expressive power of song, in a new multi-layered performance piece combining memory, music, ritual, and dance.
The Light Inside has been developed at Examined Man Theatre’s Artistic Retreats. Keep looking here for details about our workshop production of the piece, coming in 2010.
Examined Man Theatre transforms Shakespeare’s Henry the Fifth into a tale of ritual and salvation. In a country in the chaotic throws of foreign invasion, an AWOL soldier leads a rag tag bunch of misfits in ritualistically retelling the myth of King Henry, the greatest king the world has ever seen. But as the war draws closer to these peasant players, can their leader turn Henry’s ideals of glory and honor into actual heroism? This touching and inventive piece explores the place of a national hero in a time when hope and faith seem dead.
The Empty Vessel was first developed at Examined Man's 2008 Artistic Retreat.
